Monitor

Fluid extravasation — common, non-life-threatening.

Protocol Steps

    Stop the infusion immediately

  2. 2

    Disconnect IV tubing from catheter

  3. 3

    Aspirate residual fluid from catheter if possible

  4. 4

    Remove IV catheter carefully

  5. 5

    Elevate the affected extremity

  6. 6

    Apply warm compress for 20 minutes

  7. 7

    Mark the borders of swelling with a pen and note time

  8. 8

    Monitor for increasing swelling or pain

  9. 9

    Document the event and notify patient of expected resolution (24–48 hrs)
